William is 51 and from Runcorn. His foster children describe him as being someone who is fun to be with. He has been fostering for Halton Borough Council for four years.

Why did you become a foster carer?

“I became a foster carer to help children in need of a loving caring home and family.”

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your family?

“I live with my wife and between the two of us we have five children and six grandchildren, soon to become eight grandchildren. As a family we love spending time with our grandchildren and foster children in our care going out on day trips and on caravan holidays. We try and get the children interested in a number of activities. I am a tropical fish keeper and try and get all the children involved in this hobby.”

How many children have you fostered and what types of fostering have you done?

“We have fostered two children and do respite for one other but hoping to take more children into our home.”

Who lives at home?

“At the moment there is only myself, my wife and one foster child but two days a week we have another foster child stay with us.

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer or starting the process?

“It’s not for everyone, it’s hard and challenging at times but the reward is seeing the children develop into young adults.”

What have been the positives of fostering?

“Seeing the children develop and the smiles from them. Letting the child be a child as they don’t need to look after their siblings as well as themselves as we are here. Our best memory so far was when we took our foster child on holiday.”

What impact has fostering had on your family?

“None, everything carried on as normal and any foster child is looked on as a member of the family.”

How do you find the support we give you? Do you have close relationships with other foster carers?

“The support from the fostering team is brilliant. Halton foster carers are like one big family always there to talk to if needed.”
