A big thank you to everyone who entered our creative writing competition for World Book Day. The entries we received were outstanding. We picked two winners, N and I who shared their own stories from the day they met for the first time. We hope they enjoy spending their Smyths Toys gift cards.
Joint Winner – The day when a new child came! By N. A True Story!
I remember the day when a new child came. I was so nervous and scared, what if they didn’t like me? What if I didn’t like them? My Mum and Dad says it will be fine, but I was not sure. They said it will be nice to help them and meet new people. The next day, I went to school, but I was still nervous knowing in a couple of hours another child will be at home.
Later that day, when I was walking with my mum back home, I was excited, scared and a bit nervous. As I entered the house, a girl and her Social worker walked down the stairs. I whispered ‘hi’ and she replied ‘hello’ . We were the same age then so I could relate to her. She set her clothes and toys in her room and I helped her with it too. She was a little shy not much though. Later on, I asked her to play throw the ball into the bucket. She said ok. She loved our dog which was good. We played for hours and hours until it was tea. Then we went in and had tea which was papa john’s pizza. She told us she never had it before. Then she showed us her dolls and toys her dolls were X, X, X, and X. Yeah, she has a lot… anyway we pretty much became friends after that day.
Having a foster sister is nice because you get to be friends with new people but sometimes a bit challenging because you argue, and you sometimes don’t agree. It sometimes can be upsetting and fun.
But helping other kids is the main part and you get to learn their personality and play new games. You have to share your mum and dad with them which sometimes can be tough them and learn to get along. We have had many kids, but none have been this much like me.
From this day we play all kind of games dolls, families, hide and seek and many more.
Now she’s not shy in any way!
She taught us all kinds of games and how to play them. We play fairly and sometimes have disagreements but that makes it more interesting to learn what they like.
Joint Winner – True Story! By A – My First Day In Foster Care
As soon as I heard I was coming here, my heart nearly inflated like a balloon. I knew I would miss my family because I am not as dumb as some people think I am. As I talked to my social worker, she gave me a worry monster to keep forever as I was having a tough time. Then when we were getting closer, I thought oh no and I just wanted to hide wherever I could find a hiding spot. A few minutes later, we got lost and I felt quite happy because I knew I had more time to think about my new place to stay. Then, we finally found where we were going to. I saw a little lady standing outside waving and we both knew that is where I was going to stay I might of stayed there forever or maybe just for a few months.
As we started to walk up to this little lady, my palms started to shake like they never had before. She invited me in politely with a brightful smile. Slowly, I started to follow this young lady into her house. As I got into the house, I met my foster Mum for the first time. Soon after that, I found a cute dog, entering the living room.
After school time, these two girls came in from school. They showed me a tour of the house which made me feel better about staying here. When they showed me my bedroom, I loved how it looked like and I unpacked some of my stuff because I didn’t have all my belongings with me.
However, I had X, my teddy doll, with me, so she made me feel safe.
One of the girls (of my age) asked me if I wanted to play a made-up game which was having to throw a ball into a bucket without missing, I found it fun.
I was called to see what I wanted for tea- I could choose for all of us and I chose Papa John’s Pizza. It was amazing! We all played board games before bed, and I really enjoyed this.
Before we went to bed, my Foster Mum read me and the 2 girls a story. At bedtime, I felt scared because I remembered it was sports day the next day and I did not know where my PE kit was. It made me feel anxious all night and I could not settle. I soon fell asleep cuddling up to my worry monster.
This was my first night in Foster Care with a family I did not know. I found this very strange. At least the first day was done and dusted.
A rap
I was born in Runcorn 2014, Sometimes my life was a bit mean.
Now I have the best teachers in my life, they are kind, helpful and keep me out of strife.
I am the X rapper and I drive my friends all crackers.
My friends mean the world to me, we have a great time wouldn’t you agree?
My favourite things in life are football and my razor dirt bike, I have foster carers who I really, really like.
I have a brother called X and he’s the bomb! And a sister called X, and she is really jolly.
I hope you enjoyed my Rap, if you did you can give me a clap, if you didn’t, I will settle with a cheese bap. (Hehe!)
A poem from a foster carer
Sometimes in life things aren’t always great,
But there’s always someone out there who willing to change that mate.
So here I write to you a poem about this place,
And all about our Foster carers changing a child’s face.
Foster carers are here to help you on your journey and your way,
And show you all the love you deserve each and every day.
Sometimes it’s tough and you might not agree,
But your foster carers are doing what they can and just letting you be.
They know it’s been hard and you haven’t had the best,
But they want to change that and give you a rest.
You haven’t got to worry anymore or be afraid of the dark,
Because these fosters carers are here for you and love you with all their heart.
So let me just say this you’re going to be OK,
You might not think it now but I promise you will one day.

Fostering is great
If you foster it is sweet
It is where different people meet
Fostering is where you’re looking after a different child
This child may be calm or very wild
Fostering can make a child’s day
Then you can watch them play
So, what do you say
Do fostering today!
When my foster child came to stay
I was incredibly nervous that day
We now play around, we love a game
We play a lot of dolls we keep it the same
I may have been nervous
Sometimes it’s good too
Before we did fostering
I didn’t know how good it was, I didn’t have a clue
I like fostering
It still maybe amazingly fast
Help someone out
As the world is very vast
