Laura is 66 and from Runcorn. She became a foster carer five years ago.

She has three adult children and five grandchildren. She worked in social care for many years supporting adults with learning disabilities. She loved her job but retired just over a year ago to concentrate on fostering.

Why did you become a foster carer?

“I love children and wanted to see if I could help support them in some way. As a child, I was in care myself so I thought I could use my own experiences to help make a difference.

“I am a single foster carer and I have fostered 3 children so far, 1 long term.”

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer or starting the process?

“Just do it because it’s very rewarding. I have really enjoyed the challenges and I’ve gained so much experience through being a foster carer. I’ve loved supporting my foster children to learn new skills.

What changes have you seen in the children you have fostered?

“There have been so many changes. Having boundaries put in place has given them comfort and stability. They are calmer in school. They can go for appointments at the dentist now and have treatments – whereas they point blank refused to go inside the dentists when they first came to live with me.

“One child refused to take his coat off in school for five years as it made the child feel safe. He now takes it off. He used to eat with fingers, now can he can use a knife and fork. The child swears much less and uses manners more, especially in school. Teachers have said how much the child has come on.”

What small things have made a big impact?

“Going out and doing activities. We love going to the cinema, visiting new places, going to museums, going on holiday abroad with family. As a family we do lots of things together.”

What have been your best memories so far?

“How fond I have become of the child/children in my care. And to see them laugh and have fun.”

What impact has fostering had on your family?

“Mostly it’s been good. The grandchildren have learnt to be patient and my adult children have learnt that you don’t have to be related to enjoy and include other children in your lives.”
