Rahila is 54 and from Manchester. She fosters for Cheshire West and Chester Council. She has been fostering with her husband for six years.

Why did you become a foster carer?

“Every child has the right to live a happy and safe life. I started to foster because I want to give the children in need a bright, safe and prosperous life so that they can also enjoy life and have a bright future ahead of them.”

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your family?

“I am an English teacher, and my husband works in a bank. We both love to help children and we like to engage in activities with them that help them to build their confidence, personality and become better human beings.”

How many children have you fostered and what types of fostering have you done?

“I have fostered two children, a boy and a girl. They are both long term (permanent) fostering.

Who lives at home?

“My fostered son, my husband and I live together at home.”

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer or starting the process?

“Fostering may be challenging at first. However, once we build up our patience and a relationship of trust with the fostered child, fostering becomes very enjoyable as it enables us to share our feelings of love and care with the child. The more trust is developed, the stronger the family bond becomes.”

What have been the positives of fostering?

“Seeing our foster son grow up with lots of confidence both physically and mentally. He is making great progress in his health, fitness and education.”

What changes have you seen in the children you have fostered?

“They have learnt to differentiate and now they are able to make choices. My son is much more confident and he feels very strong and healthy. He has greatly developed his social skills and he is able to communicate with people of all ages now. His medical issues have nearly finished now and he is fit and healthy.”

What small things have made a big impact?

“He is able to take his own showers and dress up independently. He is able to use electronic devices without any hesitation.”

What have been your best memories so far?

“My foster son was scared of the camera in a mobile. He would scream if someone took his photo but later as he mingled with us, he began to love taking selfies and family photos.”

What impact has fostering had on your family?

“We have a stronger family bond now. We are busy in various social activities in our free time with our fostered son likes travelling, hiking, BBQs , swimming, and riding bikes.”

How do you find the support we give you? Do you have close relationships with other foster carers?

“Yes, we are provided with very good support and we have friends who are foster carers as well.”

Please could you ask the child/children you are fostering to describe you ?

“Hello, My foster parents are really sweet and kind. They go out of their way just to see me smile and happy. I remember the first day I arrived at my placement, I was in tears and I couldn’t look them in the eye due to how sad I was. Now 5 years have passed and look at me now. We are one family now getting on perfectly well and I don’t even feel I’m fostered. My life has changed and I have come out of the dark tunnel of my past life . Now I am thriving and everyone loves me. I am as happy as can be for the world’s best foster carers belong to me.”
