Catherine is 66 and is a foster carer from Chester. She has been fostering for four years. She has four grown up children and a husband who still works part time. She decided to foster because she was newly retired and wanted a worthwhile occupation from home.
She enjoy music, walking and above all being with her family. She is also involved in her local community.
How many children have you fostered and what types of fostering have you done?
“I’ve done short term and respite. I’ve fostered about 12 children in total and the children I have looked after have tended to be teenagers.”
Who lives at home?
“My husband and I, plus a 18 year old boy (care leaver) who is hoping to move into a flat soon with his friend.”
Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer or starting the process?
“Just do it ! There have been many positives to fostering for my family. It brings another angle and whole different way of life into our home.
“It can be challenging at times, like when I child is unsettled but it’s wonderful when you see them change and become more relaxed. Just having someone they can talk to can make a huge difference to a child.”
What have been your best memories so far?
“Having fun with the children and respite children wanting to return to us. Fostering has been positive for your family and our children are very supportive.”
