Warrington foster carer Gillian wants to encourage anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer to request an information pack or attend an information session. She says: “Go for it, take the leap. It’s so rewarding. A lot of ups and some downs, but a lot of satisfaction.”
How many children have you fostered and what types of fostering have you done?
“We’ve fostered 10 children. Some short term, some long term. Our long term children still live with us.”
What have been the positives of fostering?
“Getting to welcome children into our home and watching them thrive and grow into wonderful young people. My best memory was seeing my foster son graduate from university top of his class – wow, what a moment that was!”
What have been the challenges?
“Social media and phones are the biggest challenges. Birth families can sometimes be an issue.”
What changes have you seen in the children you have fostered?
“Building in confidence, being happy and settled. Being able to make friends.”
What small things have made a big impact?
“Compliments and praise. Listening and being non-judgmental.”
