Mark Mirfin, Knowsley Council’s Executive Director for Children and Young People, shares his own experience of what it was like sharing his home with other children. Mark’s parents were foster carers for four years.
Mark said “I was around the age of four when my parents decided to foster children, and they fostered until I was 8 years old. During these four years, I can’t remember a time when there wasn’t a house full of children.
“I didn’t ever feel like I was sharing my parents – we were one family and we did everything together.
“I knew, even at an early age, that children didn’t all have the same opportunities that I was lucky to have, and I knew that we were doing something amazing!
“Early life experiences of living in a fostering household played a significant impact on the choices I made in my personal life and professional career.
“My wife and I have since gone onto foster children and later adopt a child we fostered.”
Fostering has so many positive effects on the children and young people whose parents foster.
