Dave fosters his granddaughter

Dave is a family & friends foster carer (connected carer). He has been fostering his granddaughter for two years. He lives in Northwich and is 49.

Why did you become a foster carer?

“My granddaughter came into our care after we were asked would we take her on.”

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your family?

“I’m Dave, married to Vicky. I’m a vehicle paint technician and dad to two boys. We like going on holiday to Cornwall/Devon and enjoy fishing and walking, also gardening.”

Who lives at home?

“My wife, myself, my youngest son and my granddaughter.We have cats, a dog , pond fish and two lizards… my granddaughter loves playing and watching them all.”

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer or starting the process?

“Take your time getting to know them. Keep them occupied and show them love and care.”

What have been the positives of fostering?

“The help and support we’ve received.”

What have been the challenges?

“Bringing up a child at our age… 49 and 54… can be tiring at times.”

What changes have you seen in your granddaughter?

“She’s more happier and coming along brilliantly.”

What small things have made a big impact?

“Going for evening walks and showing her wildlife and explaining what they do etc.. . great for learning and fresh air.”

What have been your best memories so far?

“So many to mention… but looking back when she came into our care till now she’s growing up so fast and very clever with a great personality.”

What impact has fostering had on your family?

“We get tired from time to time and don’t get out as much as we should.”

How do you find the support we give you? 

“The support is good. We used to have a close relationship with our previous social worker but now we’re going through an SGO order (Special Guardianship Order).”
