Reggie from Chester has been a foster carer for 6 years. He is married to Gail and they have two adult children and two grandchildren.

Reggie is retired now but served in the Cheshire Regt in the early 70s and worked principally at Vauxhall Motors and Airbus.

Why did you become a foster carer?

“I was in residential care myself as a child. It was only for a very short period, however it made me want to become a foster carer at some stage.

“We originally fostered two brothers for over 3 years and we currently foster a single boy. We have occasionally covered short stay fostering.”

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer or starting the process?

“Making a difference is about considering the frustrations of fostering balanced with the satisfaction of seeing small gains in changing a child’s behaviour and approach to life.

“Having a structure and routine can make a big impact. It’s wonderful when you start noticing that they have become more outgoing and responsive to others. They also grow in confidence and self-esteem, believing in themselves.”

What have been your best memories so far?

“Watching one child sing on his own at a family Christmas party was magical and another highlight has been seeing a child moved into mainstream classes.

What impact has fostering had on your family?

“My two daughters and grandchildren have been positive about the children in our care and always seek to include them in activities. Our 10 year old springer spaniel is very good natured and the children enjoy petting and talking with her.

“We’ve made friends with other foster carers too. My wife likes to spend time with another couple who foster. Sharing experiences can be very therapeutic.”
