As part of our ‘Could you open your door?’ campaign, we sat down with some of our existing foster carers to see what inspired them to foster.
Tell us a bit about yourselves…
We’re Chris and John, we’ve been married 50 years, have 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, plus lots and lots of children we’ve fostered over the years.
What initially inspired you to foster?
We had a spare bedroom and thought we could put it to good use and help local children in need to have a safe and stable home.
How was the initial assessment process?
It was good but strange! It’s an unusual situation to be in, but we found it quite interesting to see how and why certain questions are asked, and it all completely makes sense once you get more involved.
What’s been your proudest moment?
We were incredibly proud when our foster son won a silver medal at the Special Olympics. Just WOW! What an achievement for him.
How do you find the support you receive?
It’s great. From the staff in the office, to our fellow foster carers, we all help each other. We’ve got many friends who also foster. We are a fostering family. We like to get involved with almost everything!
What would you say to anyone considering fostering?
Go for it with bells on!
