Nafeesa is 44 and from Warrington. She has been fostering with her husband Adam for almost six years.
Why did you become a foster carer?
“Both myself and my husband felt we had time, space and love for children in need.”
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your family?
“Me and Adam have 5 of our own children, the eldest being 22 and the youngest is 10. Fostering is our only job we do as we feel these children need lots of time and attention.
“We are currently looking after 3 unaccompanied asylum seeking children, 2 of the children are Afghans and 1 is from Iran. All 3 boys are in education. Me and Adam like to support the boys with their health appointments, educational needs and their immigration.”
How many children have you fostered and what types of fostering have you done?
“In the past we have fostered around 16 children. Most of the children being long term and they’ve stayed with us until post 18 .We have looked after respite placement children who have needed a home urgently throughout the weekends.”
Who lives at home?
“Both of us, our 3 daughters, 2 sons and 3 fostered children.”
What have been the positives of fostering?
“Working together as a family, receiving lots of support. It has been lovely to see the children become independent and to see English speaking improvements.
What have been the challenges?
“Children with challenging behaviours.”
What have been your best memories so far?
“When we go out and spend time with the looked after children. Family parties and other moments.”
How do you find the support we give you?
“The support groups are really good. My family plays a big role with my children in care, they see the children as family members and that makes the children feel so good and settled. They have a loving home.”
