Ste is 47 and from Northwich. He has been a foster carer for just over a year.
Why did you become a foster carer?
“We wanted to open up our home and family life to help out a child in need.”
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your family?
“I’m a Consultant Design Engineer, my wife – Sue, works part time so was well placed to become the main carer. Our daughters are aged 15 and 12 and we have a house rabbit (called Fudge) and a couple of tropical fish.
“We like the outdoors, watching or attempting to participate in sports, board games and going out for a coffee.”
How many children have you fostered and what types of fostering have you done?
“We have fostered one child so far which has gone well and is ongoing. We were initially approved as short term foster carers but are now approved for long term.
Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer or starting the process?
“Be fully dedicated to doing it before you start – it takes more time and energy than you imagine, but is really worthwhile when you keep looking back and seeing progress being slowly made.”
What have been the positives of fostering?
“Seeing our foster daughter come out of her emotional shell, bonding with our daughters and developing self care and better relationships with her existing friends as well as making new friends.”
What changes have you seen in the children you have fostered?
“Emotional coldness starting to end, hearing giggles, seeing how she cares for herself and others.”
What small things have made a big impact?
“Praise. Regular exercise. Regular meal times.”
What have been your best memories so far?
“Spending summer holidays away together.”
What impact has fostering had on your family?
“It’s helped us all learn to be less selfish and work together as a team.”
