Lorraine is 53 and from Ellesmere Port. She has been fostering for twelve years.

Why did you become a foster carer?

“We became foster carers to look after our daughter’s best friend. We have since fostered another ten children – long term, short term and respite.”

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your family?

“I’m married and I live with my husband and our foster child who is with us short term. We have one birth daughter, two grandchildren and two foster sons who we still support (they are 21 and 22).

“I work part time and my husband works full time. We are an active family and enjoy doing everything and anything!”

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of becoming a foster carer or starting the process?

“You’ll have plenty ups and downs, the good outweighs the bad. You’ll have a social worker who looks out for your wellbeing and they’ll help you.”

What changes have you seen in the children you have fostered?

“The children grow in confidence when they start believing that people love and support them. Listening can make a huge impact.

What have been your best memories so far?

“I can’t pick. Every child has been different and we have so many memories from each individual child… everyone of them are the best.”

What impact has fostering had on your family?

“We have a big family and all the children are accepted and treat as family.”

How do you find the support we give you? Do you have close relationships with other foster carers?

“Our social worker is amazing and has supported us though some very tough times. We have good relationships with a few foster carers who now we class as friends.”
